I learned this morning that the husband of one of my good friends was laid off today. The well-known and respected construction and land development company he worked for is all but shutting its doors due to the state of the current economy. This man is a highly qualified, exceptionally skilled executive level guy. He gave nearly two decades to this employer, and in 2 weeks will have very little to show for it.
I’m not for making broad generalizations or pithy comments that start with, “It just goes to show…” If you are part of the Free Agent Nation you have embraced the philosophy that job security is more a function of your value to the marketplace than your position on the org chart. It is never too late to take inventory of your personal and professional skills, and you cannot underestimate the value of periodic reassessment. Know thyself, tune into your passion, seek opportunities to add value to the world, and your security will be assured.
